Pier Giorgio Frassati, born in 1901 into a wealthy Italian family, was known for his love of the mountains and his care for the poor. He died of polio at just 24. His life shows us that holiness can be lived in everyday moments and through our passions. Frassati’s story powerfully speaks to young adults today: that our everyday choices, passions, and talents - whether on a mountain peak or in a parish community - can be paths to holiness.
Inspired by his witness, 16 young adults from Holy Spirit Parish recently embarked on a camping and hiking trip from Darwin to Katherine Gorge. Like Frassati, we sought both adventure and encounter - with each other, with creation, and with God. It was a joyful, deepening, and connecting experience.
Just like Frassati, we discovered that our gifts, even hiking, can bring us closer to God and one another. His life continues to inspire young people in our parish as we prepared to celebrate his sainthood this year in Rome. It’s possible now, in our youth, in our friendships, in the wild beauty of the NT - and in the simple act of saying “yes” to God.
"Verso l'alto!" ("To the heights!")
St Pier Giorgio Frassati
