This Advent, we’re reminded that mission begins at the margins. Like Mary and Joseph, may we take faithful risks, carrying Christ’s peace to those most in need.

In this priestly vocation story, Fr Justin Uzabeaga reflects on his journey to the priesthood as he celebrates two years of ministry. From wrestling with the idea of becoming a priest to a powerful encounter at Light to the Nations, Fr Justin shares how discovering God’s reality led him to discern his calling and find fulfilment in preaching the Gospel and celebrating the sacraments.

Inspired by Pier Giorgio Frassati youth spirituality, young adults from Holy Spirit Parish journeyed from Darwin to Katherine Gorge for a camping and hiking experience of faith, friendship and encounter. Like Frassati, they discovered that everyday passions and time in creation can draw us closer to God and one another. Holiness is possible now — in youth, adventure and saying yes to God.

On 20 July 2025, our parish community joyfully celebrated the Parish Priest Installation of Fr Cameron Smith MGL as Parish Priest of St Scholastica’s and St Benedict’s. Officiated by Bishop Thinh Nguyen, the celebration was filled with thanksgiving and hope. We give thanks for Fr Cam’s faithful service and pray that his ministry continues to flourish and inspire many to follow Christ more closely.

This testimony shares a powerful personal encounter with God through the guidance and support of the MGLs. Through prayer, community, outreach and a life-changing retreat experience, faith became deeply integrated into everyday life. Discovering the peace that comes from knowing Jesus personally became the foundation for living, serving and sharing faith with others.

Growing up in an orphanage in India, Fr Baiju MGL discovered God not as a distant figure, but as a personal and loving Father. Through moments of deep loneliness and unexpected spiritual encounters, he came to embrace his identity as a beloved son — a journey that ultimately led him to the priesthood. His story is a powerful witness to how God's love can transform even the most painful beginnings.

This Easter, the communities of St Martin de Porres Aboriginal Catholic Community and Holy Spirit Parish brought Art in Action to life, proclaiming the Gospel message through art. From a painted Easter candle symbolising hope, to a striking crown of thorns installation, local artists used their God-given gifts to help others encounter Christ’s love. Through prayer and creativity, they revealed the beauty and power of the resurrection.

We’ve just completed our sixth Alpha course at St Benedict’s, and it was a great success - with over 30 participants consistently attending over the past 12 weeks. Alpha remains a key part of our parish renewal strategy here in Narrabundah. It’s helping to shift the culture - turning guests into hosts - and giving parishioners a real opportunity to be on mission within our own community. We were blessed to host youth discipleship expert Everett Fritz in our Sydney mission this May. Founder of Andrew Ministries, Everett trained and encouraged 17 youth leaders from Penshurst and Oatley parishes, sharing powerful insights on small group ministry and discipleship. His visit left a lasting impact on our leaders and parish communities, inspiring renewed vision and momentum in youth ministry across our Mission.

In 2015, during a priests’ retreat at St John Lateran Basilica in Rome, I had the privilege of asking Pope Francis a question. As he answered, he maintained eye contact with me, and afterward, I approached him for a blessing. To my surprise, he embraced me warmly and accepted my book, His Name is Mercy. He held it up joyfully, later releasing a book titled God’s Name is Mercy. That moment deeply touched me with the Father’s love.
