The Church has a treasure of artwork and God has always provided artists to teach and proclaim the Gospel message. In a true example of art in action proclaiming the Gospel message through the communities of St Martin de Porres Aboriginal Catholic Community and Holy Spirit Parish were especially blessed with beautiful artwork to help everyone encounter God’s Love over Easter. Kerrie Stephensen from St Martin de Porres Aboriginal Catholic Community prays for a simple image to paint on the Easter candle each year. This year being the year of ‘Hope’, Kerrie received and painted an image of the dark tomb being broken open and light coming into the tomb leading the way to freedom.
Across the car park at Holy Spirit a team of artists including Michael Byrne, Mary Byrne, Anne Coulter, Methinee Intarapanya and Natalie Lim were inspired by the Holy Spirit to create a giant crown of thorns to decorate the church. This artwork brought to life the brutality of the crucifixion of Jesus and also the beauty of his resurrection. It was an amazing creation and the team had to commit and trust it would all work out. The team prayed together that whoever gazed at it would be blessed.
The artists from both communities prayed to be instruments in God’s hands and our communities in Darwin were so blessed that they all trusted in their God given talents. By using their gifts and with the help of the Holy Spirit our artists blessed us by making God’s Love more visible and present through beautiful artwork.
